After five years, R. City, known to some as Rock City, was released from their recording contract with Akon's Konvict Records. The group launched a public campaign dubbed PTFAO (Put the F**king Album Out) to appeal their business relationship because their debut album on Konvict was not given a release. After two years in seeking options to dissolve their recording contract, Akon offered the group an opportunity to remain with the label and work towards dropping an album or being released from their contract. The group opted for the latter and exited Konvict.
While R. City struggled to free themselves from their record deal, the group wrote and produced songs for Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Chris Brown, Jennifer Hudson (Grammy nominated), R. Kelly and Akon.
Now that R. City has been released from Konvict Records, the duo will release their debut album "Free At Last," on their record label, Rebelution Records.
Akon believes the secret to his success is his love for all kinds of different musical styles.
The R&B star says unlike other singers, he has a wide listening taste which improves his song writing.
"There are people who only listen to urban music and nothing outside of that," he explained.
"They don't listen to reggae, rock, dance or house music. To me that's bad for the music business and artists."
Akon also went on to tell Vibe magazine that he's excited by the few artists who are daring enough to experiment with new sounds.
"Is Euro pop hurting R&B? No," he shared. "I think it’s great that people want to try new things. Why limit yourself? The world is bigger than just America."
Singer/songwriter/producer Akon is a triple threat and he is also credited with being of the people who unearthed Lady Gaga. During a recent in studio chat with Hot 97, Akon talks about knowing that Gaga was the next big thing and his real estate investments, among other things.
"I saw that all coming," Akon said when asked about his instincts towards Gaga. "I was just hoping she got a fair shot. It just fell in my lap, literally. It was so obvious from the moment she walked into the studio in all gold leotards at that time and did one song. When she did one song, it was no question. It was a matter of who had the guts to actually support it."
Akon also acknowledged that launching a record label was the smartest thing he ever did, as the residuals keep flowing and keep his business running.
Akon, who co-penned 'Just Dance,' one of Gaga's initial singles, also owns investment properties in Africa, as well. He divulged some of his real estate secrets, saying, "Anything on the waterfront, I want it. In Africa, they don't like the water. Anything close to the water? They shun it, so it's mad cheap, so I grabbed it."
Akon, who was incarcerated years ago, said that he actually used his time in the slammer wisely and left the locked up life with a business plan in hand. "I had a 10-year business plan, since you have nothing but time on your hands," he said about killing time while in the big house.
R&B singer Akon shocked fans recently when he stripped down to his underwear and socks while on stage for the OMG Tour with Usher.
The surprise came during a show in Sunrise, Fla. The singer, famous for "Smack That" and other songs, grinned then headed backstage.
The tour rolls into The Palace of Auburn Hills on Sunday. Tickets are $30.50 to $100.50 and are on sale by calling 800-745-3000 or visiting www.ticketmaster.com.
During the tour, Akon said in an interview with The Flint Journal, he is playing three to four new songs from his long-in-the-works September 2011 album "Stadium." That includes the single "Angel," which was produced by French knob-turner David Guetta.
But will Palace fans see the same show as the Florida fans did? Only Akon knows.
In a scene that certainly left fans in shock and awe, singer Akon was at a recent concert in Sunrise, Florida when all of a sudden he started to strip on stage right down to the boxer briefs that he had on.
Akon is currently on tour with Usher and during his set all of a sudden started to take off his shirt and pants and then was down to his boxers. He danced around for a short while then immediately went backstage and put some newer clothes on.
It is still being questioned as to why he decided to strip down in the first place but fans where certainly held agast.
